Valley Orchestra Guild

Now is the time to begin preparing for the All State Music Festival Auditions to be held on Oct. 22. Audition excerpts will be posted in late July on the Iowa High School Music Association website (www.ihsma.org). A preparatory session will be held at Valley High School on Aug. 10 from 7-9 p.m. in the orchestra room.

Students should already be working on their major scales through 5 sharps and flats as well as a solo of their choice. NOTE NEW TEMPOS FOR ALL STATE SCALES: VIOLINS, VIOLAS AND CELLOS MUST PLAY SIXTEENTH NOTES AT QUARTER = 60; BASSISTS MUST PLAY SIXTEENTH NOTES AT QUARTER = 50

Receptions after concerts have been a long time tradition. Students, their families, faculty and guests mingle in the cafeteria, enjoying baked cookies/bars, coffee and punch. VOG supplies the coffee and punch. Students and their families take turns supplying goodies (alphabetical by last name). Please bring two dozen treats to the cafeteria before the concert! Thank you for your help!

Thank you to the students who applied for the scholarship. We appreciate your efforts and taking the time to complete the application process. You will be notified of the results in the near future.

All VHS and VSW orchestra students are eligible to apply for the Fall Scholarship. The scholarship may be used for private lessons, instrument purchase/rental, music purchase, orchestra trips, or other relevant musical activities.

We encourage all qualified orchestra students to apply. Please read and carefully follow all directions. Failure to follow directions may result in your application being removed from consideration.

Please check back after in January 2012  for the Spring Scholarship ($250) and the Senior Scholarship information and applications.

Applications for the fall scholarship are due by 1:00 November 11, 2011

Parents and students: if you think you'd like to find a private teacher to help you learn more about playing, ask your orchestra teacher for a recommendation. They have lists of available teachers. Fellow students who already take private lessons will also be able to recommend teachers. The Des Moines area has many wonderful teachers to choose from.
